Instagram Account Impersonating MHC Student Org

Student Involvement shared this message with the MHC student body on May 2, 2023:

Please be aware of a scam that recently occurred via Instagram. It appears an account was impersonating a student organization on campus and has been direct messaging students to elicit money. This activity was determined to be fraudulent and immediately reported to Instagram.

How to Protect Yourself

  • Never agree to accept money or buy gift cards at the instructions of someone you do not know or even someone whose name might seem familiar.

  • Online solicitations that seem “too good to be true” are many times just that.

  • Never send personal information, bank information, or agree to transfers of any kind. If you should for some reason, understand clearly you may be solicited for more and that you may compromise your identity safety. Stop immediately and report this activity to Public Safety. Public Safety is available to you 24/7 at 413.538.2304.

  • In addition, if you suspect you've been targeted by a scammer or phishing attempt, please report it to the Technology Help Desk immediately.
