Ruth Muskrat, Class of 1925, was a member of the Cherokee Nation. In 1923, she presented a copy of The Red Man in the United States by G.E.E. Lindquist to President Coolidge. During her meeting, she said, “We want to make our own unique contribution to the civilizations of the world–to bring our own gifts to the altar of that great spiritual and artistic unity which such a nation as America must have. This, Mr. President, is the Indian problem which we who are Indians find ourselves facing.” For more information, contact archives@mtholyoke.edu.
