Know Your History: Frances Kerr

In celebration of Black History Month, ASC recognizes Frances Kerr, the first Black person appointed to the faculty of Mount Holyoke in 1961. She was a professor of psychology and education, director of Gorse Child Study Center, and director of the ABC program. She raised scholarship funds and recruited Black students to attend MHC. In addition, she was an educational consultant for Head Start nursery schools in Holyoke and on the Board of Directors of Holyoke Hospital. She held leadership positions at the National Conference on Christians and Jews and her sorority, Alpha Kappa Alpha. Kerr retired in 1985 and died in 1996.
