New guidance for reporting phishing to LITS

MHC has recently onboarded a new security software that protects MHC Google emails from phishing attacks. With this new software, the best way to report suspicious emails to LITS has changed.

What is the new best way to report phishing emails to LITS?

Instead of forwarding suspicious messages to the LITS Technology Help Desk, simply report them as phishing within Gmail

Taking this action will improve the capabilities of our new security software so that similar messages are less likely to land in your inbox next time.

Additionally, the security software will review your report and LITS will follow up with you to inform you whether we believe the message was benign, spam, or malicious. In the case where the message you report turns out to be malicious, LITS will take appropriate action to protect the MHC community.

Even if you’re not sure if something is malicious, you can still report the message as phishing in Gmail to have it be reviewed.

Should we still look at the LITS Phish Bowl?

Yes! Phishing messages that make it to people’s inboxes will continue to be added to the LITS Phish Bowl

If you see a message in your email inbox that is in the Phish Bowl, the best action to take is still to report it as phishing within Gmail.

What if I get a phishing message that isn’t an email?

If you get a text message, phone call, or other message outside of your MHC email inbox that you believe is malicious please continue to email helpdesk@mtholyoke.edu with information about the message. Screenshots are very helpful to include.
