The 48th session of the UNESCO World Heritage Committee 2026 will be held in Busan, South Korea. The event, marking the first time South Korea hosts the committee, is scheduled to take place from July 19 to 29, 2026, with the BEXCO Convention Center to be the main venue and Paradise Hotel Busan designated for all the OEP.
The meeting will last for 10 working days. The session will review and make decisions on UNESCO’s programs and activities.
This is the first time South Korea chairs this major international event. The conference will focus on global heritage conservation. This event will bring together high delegates and scholars to review global cultural and natural heritage.
THEME: The conference will spotlight global heritages, focusing on the connection between local knowledge, sustainability, and cultural preservation.
KEY AREAS: Include the implementation of the 2021 Recommendation on Open Science, the renewal of Category 2 Centers, and the evaluation of UNESCO's work in areas like Cultural heritages, Education, Gender Equality, and climate action. The session will also address the dates and provisional agenda for the board's future meetings
Open Science:
The Board will discuss the progress of implementing the 2021 Recommendation on Open Science, including the preparation and submission of national reports by Member States and advancing scientific cooperation through the Man and the Biosphere (MAB) program, the International Hydrological Program (water security) and ocean science.
This conference will review UNESCO's work across various sectors, including culture and education, with a focus on the SDG 4 Education 2030 agenda and literacy initiatives.

The Executive Board, which supports and oversees the activities of the General Conference (GC) and the Secretariat according to guidance from National Commissions and Intergovernmental Committees and Councils, would like to learn from your field experiences to assist in review of UNESCO various policies and frameworks.
This forum is intended to be a high-level Summit, including Executive Board, Heads of States / Governments or other representatives which will result in a centralized political document designed to shape global cultural heritage and educational policy, establish an inclusive and Transparent intergovernmental process on cultural heritage and educational sustainable development goals that is open to all stakeholders.

NOTE: 30 May 2026, is the deadline date for registration. Registration to this Summit is strictly for invited individuals and organizations only.
UNESCO will sponsor round-trip international airfare for all invited participants.
Invited participants will be responsible, in advance, for covering the cost of their hotel accommodation only. The organizing body will provide a daily three-course meal for all participants throughout the duration of the conference in addition to logistics both on arrival and departure.
A stipend and incidental allowance sufficient to cover accommodation expenses, will be provided to all participants after the conference.
The summit will be held at Busan, South Korea. The Paradise Hotel Busan has been officially designated to accommodate all the Observatory Executive Participants attending this forum.
Participants will also have the opportunity to enjoy special luncheon events, explore local tourism attractions, and take part in outdoor tour activities available within the host city.
In addition, a C-3-1 Short-Term General Visa authorization letter will be issued to all confirmed participants who require a visa to travel to South Korea. This letter will be processed by UNESCO once a participant has completed his or her registration through the South Korea Consulate General to support visa applications.
