WMHC went live on air as a student-run broadcast station in 1951. Before its extracurricular use, the station was built in 1947, and used by Nadine Shepardson, assistant professor of speech, to teach forty students broadcasting basics, an emergent media form. Students wrote their own scripts, practiced announcing and radio acting, and handled the control panel, culminating in students producing and directing an entire radio show. Early broadcasts focused on variety in programming, including early morning campus news-casts, discussions between students and faculty on current campus and world issues, music.
