Windows 10 computers upgrading to Windows 11 starting Aug. 12th

Microsoft is ending support for Windows 10 in October 2025. Starting August 12, LITS will begin upgrading eligible Windows 10 computers to Windows 11. This necessary upgrade is part of the College’s ongoing efforts to ensure our systems remain secure, up-to-date, and compatible with modern tools, features, and security protocols.

Will my computer be affected?

  • Only MHC-owned Windows computers still running Windows 10 will be affected. If your computer is already running Windows 11, then this change won't affect you.  What version of Windows do I have?
  • All Windows computers issued since June 2023 are already running Windows 11.
  • If you have special use computers that have been granted management exceptions, they will not be automatically affected by the August 12th upgrade. LITS will reach out before the end of September for further planning.

What you need to know if your computer will be upgrading to Windows 11:

  • Data and Settings: Your files and most settings will remain intact. However, we always recommend backing up any important files to Google Drive or MHCDrive before an operating system upgrade.
  • Timing: Most upgrades will occur during inactive hours. After the upgrade is complete, you may be prompted to restart your computer the following morning.
  • Duration: If manually initiated, you can expect the upgrade to take 20-40 minutes. If your computer is a laptop, be sure to connect it to power.
  • Software Compliance: Most standard applications installed on Windows 10 will work seamlessly with Windows 11. If you are concerned about any specialized software, please submit a computer consultation ticket.
  • User Experience: For a preview of what to expect after the upgrade, take a look at these Windows 11 features including a refreshed look and layout.

Important Note:

  • Your upgrade may not happen immediately on August 12. Please keep your computer updated and powered on overnight regularly to ensure the upgrade is able to complete.

Next steps:

  • Save your work and close all programs on the evening of Monday August 11th. LITS recommends backing up your data in the unlikely event that something is erased.
  • Leave your computer powered on overnight
  • If your computer is a laptop, plug it in before you leave. This is a necessary step to ensure the upgrade is successful.

We appreciate your cooperation as we make this important upgrade. If you have any questions, feel free to reach out to the IT Asset Management Team by submitting a computer consultation ticket
