Supported file formats

Before you upload your thesis, and any accompanying material, such as images, audio or video, to the Student Theses and Honors Collection, please review these accepted file formats. File formats that are in use today may not be readable in the future, so using these standardized formats will help us maintain your thesis’ integrity over time.

If your original content type is:

Convert it to:

File extension

File size guidelines

Text (e.g., Word docs, Google docs)

PDF (Portable Document Format)

.pdf, .pdf/a

At or below 3MB is best; larger is acceptable but may not open within the browser window.

Image (e.g., photos, diagrams)

Note: images and diagrams within the body of your thesis text do not need to be separately converted.

JPEG (Joint Photographic Experts Group) or

TIFF (Tagged Image File Format)

jpeg, .jpg

tiff, .tif

1MB or around 1200 pixels on the longest side

Video

MPEG (Moving Pictures Expert Group)

mpeg, .mpg, .mpe

Maximum 2GB per file; if an individual file is larger, consider breaking it into sections for easier upload and playback.

Audio

AIFF (Audio Interchange File Format or

WAV (Waveform Audio Format)

.aiff, .aif, .aifc

.wav

Maximum 1GB per file
