Borrow and renew

Who can borrow?

All Mount Holyoke community members have library borrowing privileges.

This includes students, current faculty, emeriti faculty and College staff. Mount Holyoke alumnae, South Hadley residents, Simmons West students and Five College students, faculty and staff may also borrow from the library.

All borrowers must present identification when checking out items:

  • Mount Holyoke community members must present their OneCard or other valid ID.

  • Five College community members must present an active college-issued ID or other valid ID.

  • Mount Holyoke alumnae should go to Auxiliary Services to get an alumnae OneCard and come visit us at the Circulation Desk to open their library account.

  • Residents of South Hadley aged 18 and over can be issued a Mount Holyoke library barcode at the Circulation Desk. To receive a barcode, residents must present a Massachusetts picture ID that shows a current South Hadley address. If this is not possible, a state-issued picture ID and additional proof of address (e.g., a piece of mail or a utility bill) may be used.

  • Educators from South Hadley, Granby and Holyoke teaching grades K – 12 are also eligible for borrowing privileges and will be issued a Mount Holyoke library barcode at the Circulation Desk.

Loan periods and renewals

Loan periods vary depending on patron status and the type of material being borrowed. Some common examples are below. You can renew most Mount Holyoke and Five College items online through your library account. Your loan period may be shortened if an item you have checked out is needed for course reserves or requested by another person. For renewing items that you have checked out through interlibrary loan, please log in to your interlibrary loan account or email libill@mtholyoke.edu. See more under my library accounts.

On-site use

* Students may borrow up to three different equipment items at one time.  For example, Mount Holyoke students may borrow a laptop, phone charger and pair of headphones at the same time.

Laptops and iPads are not renewable but may be reborrowed if there are five of the same type of device available for checkout.  If there are not five available, laptops and iPads may be reborrowed after a 30-minute waiting period. In lieu of waiting, students may opt to borrow a different type of device.

Fines and payments

To encourage the timely return of items and ensure that materials are available for our users, overdue fines may be charged on library materials that are not returned by their due date.
