To encourage the timely return of items and ensure that materials are available for our users, overdue fines may be charged on library materials that are not returned by their due date.
Materials from the general collection actually do not accrue daily overdue fees unless another borrower requests the item. We still do ask you to renew your books to keep your due dates current.
You will receive a bill for replacement for any books that are more than 28 days late.
Reserve books, equipment and items requested by another borrower cannot be renewed and will accrue fines if not returned by their due date. Please note that while LITS does not apply overdue fees and fines on 4-hour loan equipment, we do monitor late return of these items. Keeping a reserve book or equipment beyond the specified time limit is a violation of academic responsibility as outlined in the Student Handbook.
You will receive a courtesy email before your items are due, reminding you of your due date and, when possible, enabling you to renew your items electronically. Please note that not all items can be renewed.
You will receive an overdue notice when an item is overdue, and a second overdue notice if the item is not renewed or returned. When items remain overdue, you may be charged for replacement.
If you are charged for replacement of an item, and you return it, replacement charges and processing fees are waived. Refunds will not be issued for Mount Holyoke College Library items returned 2 years after the original billing date or that had to be repurchased for the collection immediately. For items borrowed from other Five College institutions, the refundability period may be shorter (1-2 years).
When an item is damaged beyond normal wear and tear, the library will evaluate the condition and bill you for repair or replacement.
