The Mount Holyoke skating rink was gifted to the College by John D. Rockefeller. The rink was completed in January 1896, and had an official opening ceremony the next month. The building is described as a low rectangular structure, 120 feet by 50 feet, and stood near the top of the hill overlooking Lower Lake on campus. The opening celebration had the rink decorated with blue bunting for Mount Holyoke’s color, and each class had a corner of the rink to decorate.
