Established in 1994, the Ross Collection is a book arts collection principally made up of selections of books and ephemera printed by contemporary private presses. English presses are well represented, as well as presses in Germany, Italy, Switzerland, France, Holland, Belgium, Spain and Wales. There also are several American presses represented, including Gehenna, Double Elephant, Grabhorn and Providence.
It has been argued that the modern private press movement began as a result of the great arts and crafts era that flourished in the nineteenth century. In Oxford, the Daniel Press published small but lovely editions of poetry, which may have been a point of inspiration for William Morris, a student at Christ Church College, who was to transform the book arts through the work of his great Kelmscott Press.
Some enthusiasts have observed that the book arts seem to be approaching a threshold of rejuvenation. The founding patrons of this Collection, Virginia Ross, Mount Holyoke College class of 1966, and her father, George Berkeley Ross, wished to encourage contemporary private printers of fine books and acquire some of the long overlooked editions of earlier presses. In the first year, a collection of books and ephemera published by the Rocket Press of England helped to form the nucleus of a contemporary book arts collection.
The patrons hope that the Ross Collection will become an inspiration to scholars and book artists at Mount Holyoke, where, in an age of information technology dominated by the images appearing on glimmering screens, they would like to encourage a renewal of creative emphasis on the arts of the sumptuous book.
Collector Virginia Ross, Mount Holyoke College Class of 1966, requested artist Konstantin Kalinovich to create a bookplate (shown above) for the Ross Collection and "to combine two themes ... women and prophecy: women, because Mount Holyoke is a women's college, and prophecy, because of the importance of books in revealing what has been, history, and what might be, the future."
The design Mr. Kalinovich created in 1997 in response to her request delves deeply into the feminine imagery emerging from the history of the book, to render a vision of a Romanesque sibyl, the wisest of women in the classical world.
According to Latin mythology, during a time of particular crisis, the sibyls placed their prophecies before the Senate of Rome, offering to sell nine of their divinatory books, in return for a modest honorarium. When their initial offer was rejected as too extravagant, the sibyls burned three volumes and offered the remaining six at the original asking price. Upon the rejection of their second offering, the sibyls burned three of the six remainders, and offered the final three oracular volumes for the same price. This time, their offer was accepted, and for centuries the Sibylline Prophecies were consulted by Rome's rulers in times of peril.
Kalinovich's interpretation encompasses imagery from the farthest reaches of the Roman empire, embodying a sibyl who is young, astute and visionary, inscribing her wisest divinations for the future of the book arts onto the magical pages opening before her. The sibyl is responding to her vision of the two classical animals of wisdom, the owl and the serpent, permitting her to dissect time and to envision destiny as crystalline flakes of time, which disintegrate and descend, in a graceful falling of divinatory snow, whose messages are totally silent for lesser mortals. The intensity of her trance has enflamed the cyclopean eye of her peacock plume quill, as she realises the profundity of her powers. Kalinovich's vision is achieved by hard-ground etching, enhanced via the application of aquatint.
